Van driver killed in fire following collision
    2020-05-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A VAN driver has died in a fire that was the result of a collision with a schoolbus at the intersection of Huanggang Road and Lianke Road in Futian District on Tuesday.

Investigations show the electricity-powered van hit the rear of the bus carrying 34 students of Zhongnan School in Futian District during the morning rush hour.

No students were injured in the accident.

The van, however, caught fire from the collision, and the flames soon engulfed the van and the driver who was trapped inside.

Shortly after the fire started, Fan Xiaobin, a patrol officer on motorcycle, was among the first to arrive at the scene. They organized a rescue operation and used fire extinguishers from other buses and cars.

“We attempted to rescue the driver trapped inside, but failed because the fire spread quickly,” said Fan.

Meilin Firefighting Station sent four engines and 20 firefighters to the scene and put out the fire in 15 minutes, according to a release by the fire department. Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.

This was the second fatal fire accident involving a battery-powered vehicle in Shenzhen following an accident May 26, 2012.

On the same day eight years ago, three young people in their 20s were killed in the cab fire when a Nissan GT-R crashed into a BYD taxi at high speed on Binhai Boulevard. (Han Ximin)
